Donation for support of writers in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The heart of Cuvaj Se is the work it does in Bosnia-Herzegovina. We have been supporting writers in the region of the former Yugoslavia since the war in the 1990’s. Our work builds up writers who are often neglected in traditional publishing in BiH, especially women, LGBTQ, and trauma survivors. Your donation supports writing workshops, grants and scholarships, schools, and partnership projects with NGO’s on the ground.

Donation/Purchase of Thrust

100% of your purchase of Thrust will go to support the work of Cuvaj Se around the world. About Thrust, winner of the Lexi Rudnitsky Editor’s Choice Award, Gabrielle Calvocoressi writes: “I so love this book: It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book of poems and thought ‘relentless’ from the very beginning all the way through to the end. This book, this occasion, in which we come face to face with the ferocity and grace that is the poetry of Heather Derr-Smith is a moment to celebrate. It’s also a moment to reflect on the terrible compost that gorgeousness like this bursts forth from. These are poems whose mythic register refuses to buy into any kind of soap scrubbed myth. These are poems of grace that will not let the reader come to any easy peace. I can’t stop thinking about this book, is a thing I say about a fair amount of books. But this book? I can’t stop seeing this book in every place I go, in every body I pass by. I needed this book so I could recover from it and also see that some brokenness just won’t leave. Which means you’ve got to make it into something staggeringly fine.”

Donation/Purchase of The Bride Minaret

100% of the purchase of The Bride Minaret (University of Akron Press, 2008) will support the work of Cuvaj se around the world. About The Bride Minaret, Denise Duhamel writes: "The Bride Minaret is a book of emotional, literary, and cultural substance. As Mandelson wrote of Auden: the poems bear witness to the close connection between intelligence and love. The same can be said for Derr-Smith, whose work is global, with settings in Iraq, British Columbia, Algiers, Paris, Sarajevo, Bosnia, Cairo, the West Bank, and various U.S. locations. Her poems are intercultural, expansive while still grounded in the evocative complexities of motherhood, childhood, and faith. The Bride Minaret is a wonderfully intense collection."

Donation/Purchase of Tongue Screw

100% of the purchase of Tongue Screw will go in support of the work of Cuvaj Se around the world. About Tongue Screw, Lee Ann Roripaugh writes: “In rivetingly ecstatic and stunningly musical lines, Heather Derr-Smith composes paeans that praise and bless the yearning blood-thrum and finite vulnerability of human embodiment. Tongue Screw evokes the metal torture device used to prevent Mennonite martyrs from testifying as they were burned alive, and in these incandescent poems, the abjections and beatitudes of the flesh are tenderly rendered as ravishingly spiritual. Equal parts hymn ringing over the open plains in four-part harmony, and visceral soul-cry of punk rock, the poems in Tongue Screw are fiercely glorious in their evocation of troubled memory, gritty desire, and love’s holy ghost.”
